ABOUT INTERREG

The AACOMA project is funded by the European Union within the framework of the Interreg VA programme Euregio Meuse-Rhine (European Fund for Regional Development).

Until the year 2020, the programme Interreg VA Euregion Meuse-Rhine (EMR) invests close to 100 million euros in crossborder cooperation in the programme area. This area entails roughly the square between Eindhoven, Leuven, Cologne and Trier, an area with almost 5.5 million inhabitants. Through the Interreg Projects, the European Union directly invests in the economic development, innovation, the territorial development, social inclusion and education of this cross-border region.

On Advanced Composite Materials

Advanced Composite Materials include generally lightweight materials coupled with high-strength characteristics, made of reinforcing fibers combined with a polymer matrix by various possible processes. Possibilities to combine various materials are almost limitless and can be adapted to desired properties for specific applications. Bio-based materials, new materials and intermediates or high-performance additives are some examples.

By using Advanced Composite Materials we create our common sustainable future: safer, lighter, environmentally friendly through material savings, reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Automated and digitalized processes become more and more predominant and make Advanced Composite Materials competitive for the use in various sectors beyond the aeronautic sector.

The AACOMA project has as goal to inspire and support companies looking to use innovative materials by facilitating the interactions between stakeholders.

Industries and applications

Many highly innovative and leading SMEs in sectors such as Automotive, Aerospace, Electronics, Consumer products, Building and Infrastructure as well as Machine tool industry are located in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine and make it a potential hot-spot for the development of Advanced Composite Materials, manufacturing and process technologies.

From raw material producers over molders, Tier 2, Tier 1 to industrial OEMs, from trade associations over research and development to university clusters and training institutes, the EMR contains all necessary synergies which wait to be connected among each other.

About the Project

AACOMA stands for Accelerate Advanced Composite Manufacturing.
The aim of the project is:

  • to identify Who-is-who in the EMR (innovative SME´s) across the entire value chain in order to connect them with each other and establish the links to the world-class institutes and technical centers in the region
  • to establish a Virtual Technology Center (database) in the EMR
  • to identify and realize demonstrators (incl. innovative materials and processes as well as data regarding feasibility, quality and productivity), in cooperation with an international advisory board to organize 6 roadshow events, addressing key topics like automated manufacturing, additive manufacturing or bio-based material systems, combined with match-making and training events
  • with our activities in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, we are going to inspire the parties to mutually increase their competitiveness, to initiate and run joint demonstration projects, to strengthen the economy in all involved regions and finally to secure working places

About the euregio

Thanks to its many highly innovative and leading SMEs in sectors such as Automotive, Aerospace, Electronics, Consumer products, Building and Infrastructure as well as Machine tool industry, the Euregio Meuse-Rhine (EMR), from Eindhoven over Maastricht to Aachen, from Liège to Lommel, is a new hot-spot for the development of Advanced Composite Materials, manufacturing and process technologies.

The Advanced Material sector is growing with a consolidated offer, ranging from raw material producers over technology development to production, research and development to industrial OEMs.

Innovation / Demonstrators

Within the scope of the AACOMA project, innovations and demonstrators shall be identified in order to showcase the competences present in the Euregio and where it makes sense to connect entitites for successful and efficient cooperation.
